About
Assistant Professor of Ancient History. Areas of research include: Greek and Latin historical narrative, esp. Livy; Greek Biography; the Middle and Late Roman Republic; Greek and Roman military manuals; the Roman Middle East.
Articles or book chapters currently under review include: Crassus in Appian's Civil Wars, the Sulla-Bocchus conferences in Sallust's Bellum Iugurthinum, and Plutarch's Crassus.
I am currently working on articles on Crassus, Onasander, Roman decapitation, and the failed Roman invasion of Yemen.
I am working on two large-scale projects:
(i) A study of M. Licinius Crassus, which will lead to a commentary on Plutarch's Life of Crassus in the first instance; and
(ii) A study of the perception of the Roman past in Middle East countries, especially through the filter of Arabian nationalist discourses (e.g. Ba'athism in Syria and Iraq, and Nasserism in Egypt).
My teaching responsibilities vary widely, covering the full range of ancient Roman history and culture. Very occasionally I teach ancient Greek.
